Born in North Carolina, David Charles Abell studied viola, trumpet, piano, organ, and composition, turning his attention to conducting at age 14. He subsequently studied with Leonard Bernstein and Nadia Boulanger, earning degrees from Yale University and The Juilliard School. He has worked with distinguished artists including Bryn Terfel, Simon Keenlyside, Diana Damrau, Stephen Hough, Judi Dench, Emma Thompson, Lea Salonga, Idina Menzel, Heather Headley, Petula Clark, Josh Groban, Matthew Morrison, Michael Ball, and Michael Feinstein. Three of his five appearances at the BBC Proms were televised: the Richard Rodgers Centenary, Sondheim at 80, and the War Horse Prom in 2014. His particular affinity with the operatic repertoire has attracted repeat engagements with Cincinnati Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City as well as guest appearances with Opera Philadelphia, Michigan Opera Theatre, Atlanta Opera, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, and many others. Considered one of the top international conductors of musical theatre, he led the French premieres of four Stephen Sondheim musicals and conducted the Les Misérables tenth and twenty-fifth-anniversary concerts. For the centennial of his mentor Leonard Bernstein, Abell conducted Songfest and the Serenade with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, West Side Story at Glimmerglass and Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and three concerts of Bernstein’s theater music with the Philly POPS. Recordings include excerpts from La Bohème and Madama Butterfly, Something’s Gotta Give (with Simon Keenlyside), Jonathan Dove’s opera Tobias and the Angel, and complete recordings of Miss Saigon and Man of La Mancha. LUNDEN: And prove, he did. As a teenager, Tilson Thomas worked with Igor Stravinsky and Aaron Copland. He majored in music at USC, trained as a conductor at Tanglewood, was mentored by Leonard Bernstein. He took a job with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as an assistant conductor. But when its music director became ill, MTT got his big break. He took over for a season conducting standard orchestral repertoire, but he also programmed contemporary atonal music, as he told the BBC.

Mahler's music was first heard at Carnegie Hall in 1904 when Walter Damrosch led the New York Symphony Orchestra in the US premiere of Symphony No. 4. The composer himself conducted more than 70 performances at the Hall, including during his tenure as the New York Philharmonic's music director. While Mahler's music continued to be known among musicians and audiences, its widespread acceptance and central place in the orchestral repertoire emerged primarily in the mid-20th century with a major resurgence led by conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and Pierre Boulez, building on groundwork laid by earlier champions. Along with Dimitri Mitropoulos and Bruno Walter, Bernstein led the New York Philharmonic in a Mahler festival at Carnegie Hall in 1960, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Mahler's birth and the 50th anniversary of his first season as music director of the New York Philharmonic. Most recently, the Staatskapelle Berlin, led by Daniel Barenboim and Pierre Boulez, performed the symphonies in sequence at the Hall in 2009.

Okay, there are a lot of plays, creatives and cast behind them to get through, so these are the main ones you need to know. In terms of the texts, the biggest billings are a major revival of Leonard Bernstein and Steven Sondheim's West Side Story which will be taking the winter 2027 slot. Marianne Elliott - the director behind the (slightly cursed chaotic) Sunday in the Park with George musical revival - will be taking on direction for the production alongside Miranda Cromwell. The two have worked together previously on a hit production of Death of a Salesman at the Young Vic.

Mezzo-soprano Kathryn Leemhuis joins the orchestra for three lesser-known songs by three iconic American composers: Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Copland's 'Long Time Ago' comes from a set of five Old American Songs, published in 1950 and premiered the same year by the composer Benjamin Britten on piano and his partner Peter Pears singing. Bernstein's 'Take Care of this House' comes from his unsuccessful musical, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, which is described in the program note as documenting a timely theme: 'American presidents' tepid commitments to establishing fair and equal civil rights for people of every race.' Gershwin's 'O Land of Mine, America' was the composer's entry for a national anthem competition in 1919. It didn't win, but it channels the optimism of immigrants coming to America and the anticipated opportunities it offered.

Throughout this Proms season there have been commemorations of the 250th anniversary of the USA’s Declaration of Independence, resulting in multiple performances of “Fanfare for the Common Man”, but thankfully for the final concert Aaron Copland has been shelved. The overture to Leonard Bernstein’s Candide opened the show, setting things off on the right note, and another musical theatre number in Frank Loesser’s “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat” from Guys and Dolls rounded off the regular programming; sandwiched in the middle was a compelling performance of Samuel Barber’s “Piano Concerto” from the effervescent Yuja Wang.

“It has been a long time since any cultural figure arrived in New York on such a wave of high expectations,” said Adam Nagourney in The New York Times. But conductor Gustavo Dudamel, having just completed a spectacularly successful 17-year run in Los Angeles, officially stepped into the role of music and artistic director of the storied New York Philharmonic early this month, and lovers of classical music are hoping that the former wunderkind can use his new perch to revive the genre as a force in American popular culture. At 45, Dudamel “might be the most famous conductor alive today,” said Joshua Barone, also in the Times, and he achieved that notoriety by bringing a democratic touch to his chosen field not seen since Leonard Bernstein led the New York Philharmonic. “This is not a job,” said Dudamel on his first full day occupying Bernstein’s old post. “It is a mission.”

As for Simon de Pury, he expresses no hesitation regarding the comparisons to Mick Jagger, recalling how writer Bob Colacello introduced him in this manner long ago. “Other monikers mentioned ‘Leonard Bernstein or [conductor] Herbert von Karajan of the auction world,’ but it’s the Mick Jagger one that stuck,” he reflects with a hint of pride. His passion for the Rolling Stones is unmistakable, yet he emphasizes that young auctioneers should not attempt to mimic others but rather embrace their unique styles. He often cites Peter Wilson, Sotheby’s chairman from 1958 to 1980, as an example of a vastly different auctioneer whose style is one he admires.

Of those buildings, the Dakota stands as a high point of antiquated luxury and occupies a particularly vast slice of New York City cultural lore. It’s where Tchaikovsky was entertained during his tour of the US in 1891. Nureyev slept there in a flamboyant Elizabethan bed, and, later, Lauren Bacall could be found chatting with Albert Maysles or Leonard Bernstein in their shared courtyard. The building, adorned with cast-iron dragons and a sentry, has many macabre associations: In Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby, Mia Farrow was assailed there by a Satanic cult; John Lennon was shot outside on December 8th, 1980; and Boris Karloff, who played Frankenstein, lived there in the 1930s.

Robbins’ 1944 Fancy Free opened the program and was beautifully danced by Arian Molina Soca, Jack Thomas and Nicholas Patterson. This often-performed work takes place one night during WWII when Three Sailors are on leave in New York City, drinking beer, chasing women and enjoying being young and, well, fancy free. Set to a modernist score by Leonard Bernstein, the ballet’s premise and music are extended in the full-length musical On the Town, but the ballet’s plot and tone are darker. Whereas in the musical each sailor gets his girl, here, the girls leave the sailors (and rightly so) when their macho pugilism becomes tiresome. The early chasing of the girl with the red purse is also unsettling; the sailors pick on her repeatedly, yet she chooses to have a drink with them? It’s the one element that hasn’t aged well, though that is saying a lot considering the work is 82 years old and performed worldwide.

The main colonial-style home spans about 4,600 square feet and blends traditional 19th-century craftsmanship with modern structural updates. Inside, the home has old hand-cut wooden beams, exposed stone walls, and four wood-burning fireplaces with period mantels, including one from the 19th century and a Louis XV-style French limestone design. The living room has tall ceilings, wide white oak floors, tray ceilings, and French doors that open out to the grounds. To finish the interior restoration, the current owners worked with New York-based interior designer Gail Jacobs. Jacobs, known for her work on high-profile historic homes including Leonard Bernstein's former apartment at The Dakota in Manhattan, helped find period-appropriate fixtures such as antique Holophane-style lighting and Ann-Morris decorative pieces. In total, the estate has five bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms across the main house and other buildings on the property.

While Akira Kurosawa felt largely ambivalent about "The Magnificent Seven," the movie definitely holds its own as far as '60s Westerns are concerned. This comes from having a remarkable ensemble cast, with each of the titular seven given their individual time to shine at least once. Guys like Steve McQueen, James Coburn, and Charles Bronson each make the most of their screen time, because they're so unfailingly cool. Coupled with one of the most rousing genre scores ever composed by Elmer Bernstein and "The Magnificent Seven" started the '60s off right for Western cinema.

dir. Martin Scorsese, 1993, 139 min, 35mm. One breathtaking composition follows another in Scorsese's adaptation of Edith Wharton's Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece about social mores (and taboos) amongst New York's viperous moneyed classes in late 19th-century New York, brought to life by an all-star lineup of craftspeople including cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, editor Thelma Schoonmaker, production designer Dante Ferretti, and composer Elmer Bernstein. In front of the camera there are Daniel Day-Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer suffering beautifully as wealthy lawyer Newland Archer and Countess Ellen Olenska, the divorced pariah whom he yearns for, and Winona Ryder as Archer's fiancée and, eventually, wife—outwardly a winsome innocent, but a cunning, cutthroat strategist where affairs of the heart are concerned. It was, Ryder stated during a recent appearance on (of all things) Hot Ones, 'The role of a lifetime.'

A fun detail: eleven episodes of the first season of "Topper" were penned by a young Stephen Sondheim, not yet broken into musical theater. Sondheim's first musical, "Saturday Night" was completed by 1955, but it wouldn't make its Broadway debut until 1960, after the beginning of his "West Side Story." "Topper" also happened to provide one of the earliest directing gigs for Leslie H. Martinson, who would go on to helm 1966's "Batman," one of the best movies of all time. Many "Topper" episodes were also written by famed theater critic, screenwriter, and playwright George Oppenheimer. This series was a weird nexus of early 1950s talent.

The tune features multiple key and tempo changes, flugelhorn, surrealistic imagery, and the joyous refrain "Hands across the water (water) / Heads across the sky." The song is so ingenious that McCartney has never performed it live, likely due to the its multifaceted nature. Besides the various musical sections reminiscent of other McCartney compositions, there's a smattering of sound effects and an orchestral accompaniment by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Through it all, the song hangs together as a cohesive whole.

‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ with live orchestra The screening of classic horror films with live musical accompaniment has become a real local seasonal highlight. At the Theatre at Ace Hotel this year, the L.A. Opera Orchestra, conducted by Jenny Wong, will perform Franz Waxman’s score to James Whale’s 1935 “The Bride of Frankenstein.” One of the rare cases in which a sequel may be better than the original, “Bride” finds Boris Karloff reprising his role as the Monster after the success of 1931’s “Frankenstein,” with Colin Clive also returning as Dr. Frankenstein. Elsa Lanchester plays both author Mary Shelley and the title role. I’m going on Saturday because in years past the post-screening costume party has been a real hoot.

It really is a shame, too, seeing as this film has everything you could want from a summer blockbuster. That includes two incredibly likable and hot lead actors in Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway, a solid high concept that keeps you engaged from the get-go, thrilling action that'll have you on the edge of your seat, an emotional score by Michael Giacchino, and lots of dinosaur chaos.

He grew up looking the extreme potential of Norwegian nature dead in the face. When standing right outside the farm he was raised on in the rural town of Notodden, he could see snow-capped mountains and ice-cold rivers. Indoors, he spent most of his time shielded from the elements playing piano and guitar, inspired by the majesty of such metal icons as Iron Maiden and Twisted Sister, alongside swelling soundtracks composed by Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams.

Released in 1976 and directed by Alan Pakula, the film stars Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman, as Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, whose painstaking investigation of the Watergate break-in helped uncover a political scandal that ultimately led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.Based on Woodward and Bernstein's book, the film received eight Academy Award nominations, it won four Oscars. Fifty years later, it remains a landmark portrait of journalism, of cultivating sources, verifying facts, confronting powerful institutions, and following a story wherever it leads. The Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry in 2010.Last weekend WAMC and the Crandell Theatre in Chatham teamed up for a special screening of all the president's men, followed by a conversation about the film and the current state of journalism and investigative reporting. It was a full house, and our panel brought together four people with very different perspectives on the press, politics, and public life.

Gary Marks first emerged in the 1970s with three albums blending folk, rock and jazz. Those recordings brought together a remarkable group of young musicians who would become major figures in jazz and contemporary music. Guitarist John Scofield made his first studio appearance on Marks's 1974 album, Gathering. On the following two albums, Marks was joined by Paul McCandless of Oregon on oboe and saxophone, ECM pianist Art Lande, vibraphonist David Samuels and trumpeter Mark Isham.

Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich – a nominee for Gramophone's 2026 Orchestra of the Year – launched their Mahler cycle on Alpha Classics in 2025 with releases of both the Fifth Symphony and the First. The latter recording was named a Gramophone 'Editor's Choice' for November 2025, with the reviewer declaring: 'I do believe this is one of the best – perhaps even the best – account of Mahler's precocious First Symphony that I've heard on disc since the celebrated Bernstein/Concertgebouw version. … Paavo Järvi and his Zurich orchestra really do make it feel and sound brand new. Its daring colourations are relished, its youthful audacity writ large. Everything is ripe and vivid. ... Put simply this account rekindles much of the excitement that I for one experienced in hearing the piece for the first time. Heartily recommended.'

I am like the biggest Sondheim nerd ever, so I love all of his musicals. My favorite musical is Sweeney Todd. I guess I just like dark, murderous shows. But Sondheim is someone who has brought so much humanity and depth and grandeur and nuance to the form. I'm always so moved by his musicals. I grew up with Sweeney Todd, I grew up with Little Shop of Horrors. I love Something Rotten, paying homage to Shakespeare and musical theater. Those are my three big favorites. Of course, West Side Story and some of the sweeping Golden Age musicals like Oklahoma have made a huge impression on my life.
